Have You Ever Sexed an Eggplant?

Check the bottom of the eggplant. The male has a round and flat indentation. The female's is deeper and more oval. The female eggplant tends to have more seeds and therefore may be slightly more bitter.

However, the real key is freshness. Choose eggplants that are firm and shiny and don't store them for very long.

  1. Rocquie, fabulous information. I have never heard of this before! I'm not a big eggplant fan because of the bitterness but maybe it is time to give it a go again

  3. I thought eggplant is the fruit and has no sex/gender. The female flower is pollinated by the male flower and you get a fruit, the eggplant. Now I need to do a bit of research, as I find this interesting. Do other fruits bear as male and female?

  4. Well, yes, Anonymous, the bell peppers with three bumps is male and is good for cooking. The ones with four bumps is female and is sweeter and the better choice for eating raw. Thanks to one of my mothers-in-law, the one from Palermo, Sicily.
