Unusual Apple Pie

This is a recipe from allrecipes.com and is called "Apple Pie by Grandma Ople". Moshasmama, who submitted it states: "This was my grandmother's apple pie recipe. I have never seen another one quite like it. It will always be my favorite and has won me several first place prizes in local competitions. I hope it becomes one of your favorites as well!" The recipe has a five star rating on the site, with 2,473 reviewers. I couldn't resist. . .

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
8 Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.

Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work of crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.

Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees. Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

  1. FANTASTIC!!!!!!
Eating it as we speak? type! I added 1T cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg and 1 tsp vanilla to apples before poiuring into the shell. I also added 1 T less sugar to the carmel and topped with 1T "sugar in the raw". Best apple pie ever

  3. Just stumbled upon your site...love it!!! I have made this pie for several years now and it is ALWAYS a hit! Wonderful flavors. I follow the recipe but add 1 T cinnamon, I use 6 Granny Smith's with two sweeter apples and I mix 1/2 of the sauce with the apples before arranging over pie crust. I then pour the rest of the sauce over the top lattice. I found that the mixture sometimes does not coat all the apples inside the pie, seems to turn out better by mixing some of it with apples before cooking.I am looking forward to browsing your recipes!
